At the opening ceremony participants and guests were greeted by prof. Mukharram M. Bikbov, the Head of Ufa Eye Research Institute and prof. Rustem R. Daminev, the Vice-President of the Bashkortostan Academy of Science.
The Institute has a wonderful tradition of conferring the title of Honorary Professor of Ufa Eye Research Institute to famous doctors for their contribution to the development of ophthalmology and for their close scientific cooperation with UERI. In 2022 the Scientific Council of the Institute decided to award this title to Dr. Songhomitra Panda-Jonas (Germany). At the opening ceremony a diploma and a special professor gown were awarded, after that Dr. Songhomitra Panda-Jonas presented a lecture on the potential role of Bruch’s membrane in the biomechanics of the axially elongating eye.
Another tradition of the Institute is to award the medal named after the first head of UERI, Professor Viktor Odintsov. This year the Prof. Odintsov medal was awarded to prof. Mikhail Frolov, the head of the ophthalmology centre of the Russian University of Friendship. At the opening ceremony prof. Frolov gave a lecture on glaucoma drainage surgery.
The scientific program of the conference was very rich, consisting of 11 sessions and satellite symposia dedicated to various problems of diagnostics and treatment of eye diseases. More than 100 reports were presented at the conference, 25 of them were from our foreign guests.
As always live surgical demonstrations from the operation rooms of Ufa Eye Research Institute aroused great interest among the participants and viewers of the conference.
A lot of attention was drawn to the Conference Expo where leading Russian and foreign companies were able to present new ophthalmological equipment, devices and medicine.
Summing up the results of the XII International Conference on ophthalmology “East-West”, we shall note its extremely high scientific and organizational level which is evidenced by the feedback we receive from both participants and viewers.
The hybrid mode of the Conference allows ophthalmologists from different Russian regions and foreign countries to communicate to each other and discuss important and vital issues of diagnostics and treatment of eye diseases and pathologies.
